Acting Like Everyday is Earth Day: 9 Easy Ways to Celebrate Today

Earth Day comes every year on April 22 to engage and raise awareness about sustainability measures and celebrate the planet that we live on. What started on a national level in 1970, it is now observed in nearly 200 countries. It is a significant day that supercedes just looking out for the environment – it is a day where all walks of life and beliefs are coming together for a common goal.

You can easily honor this day on a year-round basis in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. The following tips are small habit changes that can all add up to make a big difference:

1. Recycle

It’s one of the simplest ways you can make a difference. By choosing to recycle you cut down what ends up in your community landfills, and also help minimize the consumption of new materials and the  pollution it takes to produce and manufacture them. You can easily check with your local city or town’s website for guidance if you aren’t sure if an item is recycleable or not.

2. Compost

Composting is not as difficult as people make it out to be. We offer some great tips on how to begin. By starting to compost in your household you are turning your waste into nutrient-rich soil. This simple act is something that works in conjuction with recycling by reducing how much waste is going into the landfills, while also being extremely beneficial to your garden.

3. Get Planting!

This one is a win-win, as you are saving money as well as the environment by growing your own vegetables in your yard. The cool part? You get to use your own homemade compost as fertilizer! There are also many vegetables you can regrow from food scraps, which gives you bonus points in sustainability.

4. Use Reusable Bags

We won’t spend time talking about the harms of plastic bags, but this is an easy fix. Leaving the reusable shopping bags in your car could start a new habit of reducing the use of plastic bags. If you find that you need them, you can reuse them around the house by lining small trashcans with them, or picking up your dog waste outside. Many grocery stores allow you to bring back your plastic bags for recycling as well!

5. Meatless Mondays…Vegetarian for a Day

By eating less meat you are helping the environment by reducing the number of greenhouse gases that are released. By going meatless for one day, or even one meal a day, you can save the planet, your wallet, and improve your health. This also gives you a reason to start looking for new recipes and get creative with it!

6. Go Paperless

Ask to be removed from junk mail datebases and switch your bills and bank statements to paperless. Many of the coupons that are found in mailers, can be easily found online and synced to your cellphone, limiting the waste. If you find you do need to print, you can always print double sided! Don’t forget to recycle your paper when you’re done with it.

7. Keep the Car Parked

If you are in a position to walk or bike to work, try it out. If you don’t have that luxury but you’re in an area with public transportation, take advantage of it. You can even talk to coworkers about carpooling once or twice a week. This doesn’t just apply to work either – if there is a place you would usually drive to, think about walking instead. It is a great excuse to start getting some fresh air too!

8. Reuse Everything

We’re talking plates, cups, bags, cutlery, napkins, anything that is single-use here. Water bottles especially should be a thing of the past…and there are some great reusable options (stainless steel is the way to go!). Not only do reusable items save the environment, but they will save you a lot of money.

9. Spread the Word

Sreading awareness about living a systainable lifestyle is FREE! Joining this movement and going green is great, but we can’t do it without your help. Starting a community campaign for Earth Day is a great way to spread the word around your local area.

This is a limited list, but all changes you can make today to make an impact towards a greener lifestyle. Anybody can join the movement towards a more sustainable way of living without having to break the bank account. Saving the environment while saving money at the same time sounds like a win-win to us!
